WHO WE ARE

History of NBD: In the Genesis

The genesis of the National Brotherhood of Dons traces back to the year 1995 when four visionary undergraduates of the Edo State University, Ekpoma, undertook a profound initiative in response to the prevalent socio-cultural disparities and injustices rampant within Nigerian society. At that juncture, the societal landscape was marred by entrenched notions of class privilege, social injustice, drug abuse, oppression, extortion, elitism, and apathy towards the prevailing social realities, particularly among students hailing from affluent backgrounds.

It was amidst this milieu of societal dichotomy and institutional decadence that the seed of the National Brotherhood of Dons was sown. Envisioned as a formidable bulwark against the entrenched negative ethos prevailing within elitist and middle-class Nigerian society, the organization was conceived as a catalyst for fostering societal transformation and advocating for equity and justice.

Central to the ethos of the National Brotherhood of Dons is the concept of donnist names, conceived to transcend tribal and nepotistic affiliations prevalent within Nigerian society. By adopting donnist names devoid of tribal or national connotations, the organization sought to foster unity and inclusivity, transcending the divisive barriers of ethnicity and identity.

Against the backdrop of the Edo State University, Ekpoma, being emblematic of the entrenched societal malaise characteristic of colonial Nigeria, a small cohort of students from less privileged backgrounds grappled with the harsh realities of their socio-economic circumstances. Some diligently pursued their academic pursuits, clinging onto the hope that education would serve as a beacon of redemption, while others aspired to integrate into the esteemed circles of their more affluent peers.

Founded upon philosophies diametrically opposed to conventional norms perpetuating societal decadence, the National Brotherhood of Dons emerged as a beacon of hope, dedicated to challenging the status quo and championing the cause of social justice and equality. The original four founding fathers, revered as the three God Fathers (GF), namely, Gideon Atamu, Kokson Bassey, and Eseoghene Jones, and a Father in the person of Princewill Orukpe, epitomized the ethos of visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to societal reform.

This noble practice, emblematic of the organization's commitment to inclusivity and unity, has been instrumental in fostering a sense of belonging and solidarity among its members, irrespective of their diverse backgrounds and origins. As the organization continues to evolve and expand its footprint, the foundational principles of unity, advocacy, and social justice remain steadfast, guiding its noble mission towards a more equitable and harmonious society.
